Part of my scrutiny of government legislation involves being a member of the Social Justice and Social Security Committee.

It has been an important committee to be a part of, and one that I have really valued being able to express my opinions on. A strong social security system - that provides dignity and respect and a decent level of support when needed most is a mark of a compassionate country. We can all be just one life event away from needing this kind of support.

Recently, the Scottish Government announced plans to invest £6.3 billion in benefits and payments in 2024-25, supporting over 1.2 million people.

This is welcome news and makes clear the SNP Scottish Government’s intentions to always prioritise those who need it most.

I was pleased to speak in support of these plans in the recent Scottish Parliament debate.

The Scottish Government have taken a different path from Westminster regarding benefits, and this has delivered meaningful change.

Benefits like the SNP’s Scottish Child Payment have been revolutionary and will be a lasting positive legacy for this Government.

And it is not just me who thinks that.

Experts have been clear on its impact too.

In a London School of Economics’ piece titled ‘What Scotland’s policies can teach Westminster about fighting poverty’ academics from the University of York wrote: “The IFS estimates that the bottom third of Scottish households with children will, on average, be around £2,000/year better off than similar English households. This is predicted to have a monumental impact on reducing child poverty rates.”

Unfortunately, while we are still part of the UK, we will always have to spend more to mitigate cruel UK Government austerity measures.

If we didn’t have to spend this money on mitigation, we could have more money for other policies that would benefit the people of Scotland.

Meanwhile, the Labour Party have proven they are no different, as they will keep the cap on benefits, while removing the cap on bankers’ bonuses.

That is shameful.

I will always stand up for my constituents in need and prioritise policies that support those living in poverty.
