There will be no fireworks display in Clydebank this year, the council have confirmed.

West Dunbartonshire Council say the traditional annual event held in Dalmuir Park has been axed for financial reasons.

According to council officers, the Clydebank fireworks display costs more than £11,500 to put on each year and became one of the events to fall victim to a raft of cuts in order to plug a £21m hole in the local authority's budget.

Instead, Bankies are being encouraged to attend the fireworks display to be held in Dumbarton at Levengrove Park, an occasion which the council say doesn't cost them anything, as it is all paid for by the Dumbarton Common Good Fund.

A WDC spokesperson told the Clydebank Post: "In order to address the significant financial pressures faced by the council, it was agreed at a budget meeting in December 2022 to cease provision of the Clydebank fireworks display and instead support any community group which wished to organise an independent event to access funding to do so.

"To date, no groups have expressed an interest in doing this.

"West Dunbartonshire Council is continuing to host one fireworks event in the area and invites all residents to enjoy the display."

It is a blow for Bankies who were hoping to see a rocket illumination in the sky this winter.

It comes on the back of the much-loved Winterfest in Drumchapel being canned after community councils and Glasgow city councillors failed to agree on a budget proposal for hosting the event.

There is no indication yet if this is just a one-off decision and the Dalmuir display will return next year.
