A YOUNG gymnast is over the moon after she won her first national competition at the Scottish Tumble Championships.

Lucy Mills, from Yoker, entered her first tumble competition which took place at the Ravenscraig regional sports facility in Motherwell last month.

The nine-year-old, who attends Dynamite Gymnastics Club in Clydebank, only hoped to just qualify for the event but left her family and team delighted when she won her category.

The Blairdardie Primary pupil has become known to her parents as 'the rocket' as she is always full of energy.

Not only does she attend four gymnastic lessons a week she also plays for Drumchapel United Girls Football.

Her mum Sonja told the Post: "She was very keen to just qualify for the Scottish Championships.

"My husband and I are over the moon for her. Tumble is always something that has come so naturally to her. She just loves gymnastics.

"We originally put her into dancing classes, but one day she started to do all these incredible flips and it was then that I knew she was destined to go to gymnastics.

“Every time I am out somewhere you will always see Lucy cartwheeling behind me. She eats, breathes and sleeps the sport. She has always been determined and motivated and it is something that truly inspires me.”

And the sky is the limit for Lucy. She hopes to compete in the British Championships next year with enough practice.

Sonja added: “Her dad Kevin, her brother Lewis and I are very proud of her and will always support her. What she has achieved so far is incredible and we will always be there every step of the way for future competitions.

“We are so thankful for her coach Shannon who goes above and beyond for the children.

"She does absolutely everything for them and I think that makes a world of difference. When the girls compete against each other they still wish each other luck. She is great at keeping the team’s moral up."
