A man who lives almost 100 miles away from Dumbarton saye he's been getting letters addressed to West Dunbartonshire Council - and doesn't understand why.

Hugh Pumphrey lives on Church Street in Dunbar, East Lothian, and for the last four years has been getting the odd letter meant for West Dunbartonshire Council offices.

The council's headquarters are on Church Street, Dumbarton, and it seems the Royal Mail have had some issues distinguishing between the two.

And speaking to the Post, Hugh admits he can’t quite understand how these letters have reached his EH postcode.

He said: “Most of them have the correct postcode, which is the odd thing, because the post office looks at that first.

“The only assumption I can make is that they get so much mail that just every now and then, someone reads as far as Church Street and just thinks ‘oh, I know where that is.’”

Hugh says that every wrong letter he has received he has immediately been put back in the post unopened but has never actually spoken to his local sorting office.

He added: “We’ve been here 20 years, and the letters that were addressed to Dumbarton council have really only been in the last four or five years.

“But its an oddity that they turn up at my house.”

The Dunbar man took to Twitter to question both West Dunbartonshire Council and the Royal Mail and try and find a solution his postage query.

It read: “Dear @RoyalMail Please learn the difference between Dunbar and Dumbarton. Yes, both places have a Church Street. But does my house in Dunbar really look like a council office with a Glasgow postcode?

@WDCouncil must be wondering where all their mail goes.”

Royal Mail responded to the Tweet, asking Hugh to send them a private message.
